Registering for your personal self-assessment tax return
One of the hardest things to do quickly was registering for self-assessment (personal tax) as a Director of a UK company. In the past clients had tried paper forms, and phone calls, with varying degrees of success.
It’s something all of our clients need to do, so that they can get a UTR (ten digit tax reference number) which enables them to file their self-assessment personal tax return for each year. Now the HMRC have introduced an online application so our clients can get set-up for self-assessment quick and easily;
(a) Go to this HMRC page;
(b) Complete the top section;
(c) For section titled “Why do you need to complete a tax return?” tick the box next to “I’m a company director” and enter the date you were appointed Director (if you are not sure of the exact date, its on your ‘My Company Info’ page;
Couldn’t be easier. We like this change – in the past this has been such a bugbear for clients and we are hopeful this will streamline the whole process.
